Our Choice
There are no guarantees in life and even the most esteemed amongst us can be proven to be wrong. If this statement were not true then we, as a species, could never have progressed in the many amazing ways that we have over the last several millennia. If it were not true the world would still be flat, we would only ever see black cars driving around the streets, and there really would be the need for just five computers in the world. (more…)

Some Organic Changes
I’m not sure if there is anyone yet that could be called a regular reader here at Organic Nation (well, if you exclude me, anyway) but if there are actually people who have been returning to read up more on the Introduction to Organic Food series or who have subscribed to the RSS feed there is a strong chance that they would be thinking something along the lines of “what the hell’s going on here, where’s the next post?” I guess if anyone holds that point-of-view or something similar then it’s probably justified because there hasn’t been a huge amount of activity here at Organic Nation lately. The Difference Between Organic and Conventional Food
In the last post in the Introduction to Organic Food series we covered how conventional food production came to be and discussed many of the common characteristics present in modern agriculture. We’d now like to contrast this with the approach taken with organics.
There are many differences in the way organic food is produced, processed, and consumed when compared against the more mainstream approaches used with most food in modern society. This is a story, after-all, which goes to the very core of the modern industrialised world and has laid the groundwork for many of the changes in humankind that have been felt around the world over the last couple of centuries. What Exactly Is Organic Food?
There’s a famous saying many will be familiar with which goes: “You are what you eat”. The sentiment of this saying takes on significance when you think about it in context of the many health and obesity-related issues which afflict many people around the world today - it seems that what we’re eating isn’t really that good for us. And yet these problems appear to be relatively recent in our history. So what’s changed? What were we doing differently in times gone-by that could be used to explain the rise in these afflictions?
One potential cause that has been identified is the way our food is produced. There is a relatively small - but growing - minority who believe that our dependence on chemical pesticides and refined fertilisers is having a negative impact on the health of our bodies; we’re slowly eating our way to bad health. The proposed alternative to this problem is organic food. (more…)
